Chloride ppm and mg/L in water
Chloride reported in ppm is a mass ratio, while mg/L is mass per volume. Solution density connects the two units. In ordinary freshwater, using 1.000 kg/L is usually a practical approximation.
Brines and other concentrated solutions can be substantially denser than water, so enter a measured or specification density for a more meaningful conversion.
Chloride is not the same as chlorine
Chloride is the stable Cl⁻ ion commonly measured in water, salt, and brine. Free chlorine and total chlorine are disinfectant measurements with different chemistry.
