PPM to mg/L for Water Calculator
The formula behind the result
mg/L = ppm × water density (kg/L) The familiar 1 ppm ≈ 1 mg/L shortcut assumes a density of approximately 1.000 kg/L.
Why ppm is approximately mg/L in water
Mass-based ppm is milligrams per kilogram. Because one liter of room-temperature water weighs close to one kilogram, ppm and mg/L have nearly the same numerical value for dilute aqueous solutions.
Using density makes the relationship explicit and lets you correct for temperature, salinity, or dissolved material when the difference matters.
Choosing a density value
A density of 1.000 kg/L is a convenient water-treatment approximation. Pure water near 25 °C is closer to 0.997 kg/L.
For concentrated solutions, brines, or process liquids, use a measured density at the sample temperature.
