For dilute water at about 1.000 kg/L, 1 ppm chlorine is approximately 1 mg/L.

Converting aqueous chlorine readings

Water-treatment instruments often display free chlorine or total chlorine in either ppm or mg/L. In dilute water the numbers are effectively the same because one liter has a mass close to one kilogram.

The density field is useful for process solutions whose density differs meaningfully from 1.000 kg/L.

A result may refer to free chlorine, combined chlorine, total chlorine, or chlorine equivalent. Unit conversion does not change that analytical basis.
